Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola: Were You Guzzling On Gulabo Mr Bharadwaj?

Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola is one of the silliest films I've seen in a long time. If this is Vishal Bhardwaj's idea of Commy-Entertainment then thank you very much and get over the Gulabo that you must have been guzzling on through the making of this waste of a film. Ironically, Pankaj Kapoor is brilliant in this boring drab film that effortlessly lulls you to sleep. Obviously Vishal loves Kapoor and he has kept some of the best moments reserved for one of the most under praised actors in Indian cinema.

Matru is another Chakravyuh with the colour red ruling the roost. The sad plight of the farmers, the forced land acquisition, the wily politician (Shabana Azmi makes villainy look so sexy), the marriage of mutual benefit and a world of never ending hallucinations that murders your patience endlessly. Now, with all the good intentions in place, all that the marketing machinery harped upon was Anushka Sharma's 'Dekho Magar Pyaar Se' undies and kachcha banyan dialoguebaazi. Yes Imran and Anushka give kissing-on-screen believability as its devoid of inhibitions. Obviously the makers must be hoping that the 'masses' will help them salvage the weekend through these sleaze-tricks.

The biggest shortcoming of MKBKM is an absolute lack of entertainment. You are promised great music in a Vishal Bharadwaj film but that's shockingly missing out here. Except for the title track, none of the songs work. Khamakha is nice but then it meanders into an abstract boring territory. Oye Boy Charlie is just about Ok. Vishal's weird fixation with Africans continues. What's the big idea mate?

I can go on and on dissecting and tearing apart the film but it's a waste of time. This movie is having no direction and it's surely not going anywhere. Don't bother.

Star Rating: * (Only for Pankaj Kapoor)

  1. At first blush I would say thats pretty harsh but then I dont know the backstory to alot of things. When is the press conference with Ms.Bachchan? And do you have any comments about the Oscar noms?

  2. Well, I am not the only one who was terribly disappointed... Check out the public opinion and gauge for yourself...Aishwarya's press con is done.

  3. Very happy for life of Pi ... Though I feel it's overhyped and adds to stereotypical presentation of Indians in movies emerging from the west

  4. But wasnt that Ang Lee who directed it? He's not exactly 'western' as opposed to Slum Dog? I read that Reliance and Steven Spielberg have vested interests in place. Is that a factor in your comment?

  5. The film is based on a novel written by an American. The stereotypes about India presented in the film aren't too different from what they've been presented in slumdog. I hope Hollywood will explore the IT magic of Indians in the west or the diverse cultural, religious and lingual heritage n co existence in India .

  6. I didnt know that..then there is a definite slant going on here..

  7. I don't know about the slant bit. But yes stereotypes about India do exist. Life of Pi is a fine film though...but definitely over hyped ....

  8. stereotypes are here to stay not only about us but everyone and everything..if u wanna change them we have to make the move not a westerner..

  9. I quite liked it, Faridoon, diametrically opposite view to yours...my review http://apurvbollywood.blogspot.in/2013/01/matru-ki-bijlee-ka-mandola.html

  11. I agree we need to make the move to break the stereotypes and I am sure many of us already have. It's time the change is noticed and acknowledged.

I respect your views Mr Nagpal. There are people who've liked the film but there are people who've hated the film as well.

  12. As for you cilemasnob Urf someeeeaaaan mishraw (who happens to be my free fund ka PR agent) it seems you have jhakowed your Saar in front of the 'masters' . You and your bunch of losers get a life. Btw saw you doing an anil Kapoor interview once. It was a joke! Want some lessons from he best in business so lemme know...

  14. you have been kind to this film otherwise the film is ultra-boring.very loose & the entertainment factor is zero.I think the movie didnt come on the screen as it was on the script.Maybe the funny scenes were funny on paper n not on screen. It happens sometimes,Its not a crime but one should realise that its a bad film and I simply dont understand how some(negligible number) of people r liking it.Being different doesnt always have to be good.Sometimes people fail..."Jhelau" is the word for this film.

  15. Achievement of cilemasnob urf someeeaaaan mishraw is that he is a Bigg loser with lots of freeee time and his only calling is abusing and ranting about anything and everything. His mind is as ugly as his coveted 'looks' .

  16. Completely agreed Billu....newspaper ads mention some critic comparing it with jaane Bhi do Yaaron...and I was like...oh really!!!

  17. @cilemasnob aka Somen Mishra works for Network 18 whose one of the top bosses is Vandana Malik...her daughter Avantika Malik is married to Imran Khan...why the hell do you that a hard nosed critic like Rajeev Masand gave such a crap film 4 stars or why his team member Somen Mishra aka cilemasnob of twitter is non stop praising it? obviously vested interests of ass licking what else? Daamaadji ki seva mein haazir hai sab!

  18. well Naved, wouldn't really know who's doing what and who has given how many stars to a film as we have a lot of quality work to do... wouldn't give any more importance to someeeaaannn mishraw as despo attention seekers like these are best left ignored... moreover he is my free fund ka PR agent..does so much of work for me...go boy shoooo!!!

Also, Imran is a talented guy and he will surely go places

  19. I agree with most of the review - I was pretty bored through the movie myself and found it to be very arty and pretentious. You have got this one bang on target. One of the better written reviews.

  20. Faridoon bhai I am not doubting Imran Khan's talent. He is very talented indeed. Your someeeaaannn mishraw really seems obsessed with you. But what an ugly looking fellow he is. His meanness is evident on his fugly face with bhengi eyes and pansy voice...But well yeah speaking about him more is giving that loser more importance. Look here above even his best pal @mihirfadnavis has called the film bad as well.

  21. Hi Faridoon, I have written a script which people have expressed interest in but have found to be a bit grim. Can you please help me add some entertainment value in it? If you have the bandwidth, will email and collaborate with you. I believe you have an excellent pulse on the audience.

  22. Naved, one has no control on one's looks but yes, Someeaaan mishraw has a very ugly and demented mind and no 'direction' in life...

Ohhh such an honour to have a comment from THE Jahan Bakshi, the social media manager of pseudo intellectual film directors (who follow him only coz even the CHAMCHAS need to be humoured and fooled)...well Mr Bakshi, you know why don't you add the following to your 'script': How to make fake twitter handles of celebs and journos and post non stop trash there, make sickening fun of anyone and everyone and yes how to spend loads of frrrreeee time in fooling one's own self in the name of cinema appreciation. Must be very entertaining na! ya your bunch of hatela losers would have a great time....

PS: Thanks for all the relentless free publicity...and yes Get a Life!
