Doing an interview with Anurag Kashyap is always a treat. He is honest, blunt and gives loads of headline worthy bytes. In the first part of this BH exclusive, Anurag talks about 'Shaitan', the shallow manner in which the film industry functions, his take on the Payal Rohatgi-Dibakar Banerji controversy, does he stand by his outburst against Bachchans over Khelein hum Jee Jaan Sey and is he afraid of people pointing fingers at him for promoting his girlfriend Kalki. One of my best interviews for sure.

So I watched your interview and found it rather informative as to the inner workings of what film makers struggle with. I use that term because there seems to be an underlying sense of frustration causing one to revert to simpler ground.
ReplyDeleteIf the train leaving the station is filled with Bachchans..Kapoors or Khans..it will be full as the wheels of the dynastys move on.
But what I am waitng for and what i havent seen yet is a film that breaks out of the box.
Many Hindi films and maybe its true in all cultures deal with the inner recesses of the human psyche albeit fill in the blank for the shock value. Even if a film has been rehashed into a different mould there doesnt seem to be anything new under the sun.
What sets you apart from say Koels Couch is that you are not the glossed over interviewer in a low cut dress. You actually can speak intellingently about films.
I havent seen anyone else do that.
So I will wait for the one film that breaks the cultural barriers for whatever reason *I dont subscribe to the one world theory* but if film making is unique in its influence then there may be a long way to go.
Thanks Margaret...there are several Indian films that break cultural barriers...try and watch Satyajit Ray's films...i m sure it will be an enlightening experience....
ReplyDeleteCheers
I like Anurag kashyaps' movies but i dont agree with his mentality though. Movies aren't supposed to break cultural barriers as such. Movies are suppose to reflect the society as much as they can and try to strike a chord with audience and make them think if they can. I feel Hollywood movies reflect American society in the realism they incorporate in even fantasy movies and Indian movies incorporate exaggerated emotions that we Indians have or once had... Sadly, watching too many American movies have brain washed youth and has led them to believe as if what they see in American movies are the real emotions (quite restrained).
ReplyDeleteTo say that directors are sophisticated pimps, I guess he gave himself a right designation. He is what he is, by choice. If u gonna enter mud, u aint gonna end up clean. This industry is all about selling and buying, whether talent, skin or big sets. Its upto you, if u want to stay in this dream (rather nightmare) world or not. He probably should start making movies for Hollywood. He has what it takes to make a good movie and his mentality will be best justified in America.
I personally think every culture has potholes and so does our, but it doesnt mean that we should criticze it and praise others; instead, we need to fill in those potholes and respect others too.
@Sidhu:
ReplyDeleteWhy would this stupid uneducated bhaiya respect anyone? Especially if he has a stupider fanbase
I think he just described himself - A Pimp of the west.
