Full Transcript Of My Interview With Shahid Kapoor
Faridoon Shahryar: Happy Birthday to you!
Shahid Kapoor: Thank you so much man
FS: Shahid meri aapse ek complaint hai ki that, you know iss kisam ki fan following hona sahi nahin hai, ki hum poor journalists ko aapke fans stalk kar lete hain. Matlab I am getting emails from like Switzerland and Singapore and Peru. You have some mad fan following in Peru and Singapore and all sorts of places. So what do you have to say to your fans who just love you and adore you.
SK: I think I share the most special bond wd with them yaar. I think the kind of love that they have given me I mean there is no way I can, I feel justify it but I am extremely grateful and thankful. I have always said this 'I am who I am because of them'. I don't think that there is anybody else who deserves more credit for the level that I have achieved than them. They have always showed me a lot of love. I have done some nice films and some terrible ones and they have always loved me constantly and am always grateful to them for that.
FS: What about the entire countdown that happened on twitter for you. That 4 days to go, 3 days to go, 2 days to go, for Shahid Kapoor's Birthday.
SK:Yeah. I mean that 'Shanatics' are really special yaar. They really are a phenomenal bunch and they always manage to surprise me and bring a smile on my face in some way.
FS:The entire love that you receive and many of them, they have a lot of suggestions as well. All the love that you get on Twitter and all over the place and many a times the have a lot of suggestion for you ki that aapko iss tarike ki filmein karna chahiye and yeh karna chahiye.
Shahid Kapoor
Haan Ji! Yes.
FS:So how do you just assimilate it, absorb it and because generally aap utna khair Twitter pe aap utna actively aap nahin karte hain lekin mere khayaal se, you read everything that is being written about you.
SK: I mean I try and read yaar. I don't think its physically possible to read everything. Whenever I get the opportunity, I love to read their comments and whatever they feel is very important for me. I used to do movies for them, the idea is to entertain them and to make them feel like their 3 hours or 2 1/2 hours that they spend inside the theatre are, you know have been spent correctly and they haven't wasted their time. So their opinion is very important to me and I am trying to do everything that I feel that they would want to see me do and do what I feel I would want to do. I mean its really a, you know, a collaborative process. As an actor you need to choose from the scripts that we are offered and work with the people who you believe in, people who you admire, people who you want to be associated with, people whose work you have seen and even got inspired as an actor. Its a combination of so many things you know, and obviously what the fans want and what they feel is also extremely important and I think it is important to any creative person because anybody who is performing is performing for an audience. Audience applause is the most important thing, there is nothing more important than that.
FS: You are having at least 3 films lined up and Phata Poster Nikla Hero that is you are working on currently and you are having Rambo Rajkumar.
SK:Yeah. I mean I have started work on, actually almost wrapped Phata Poster.. we have finished about I would say 85 percent of the film. Just about 5 days of scenes and the songs are left. The talky of the film and the action of the film has been wrapped so.. that should be out in August and I am starting Rambo Rajkumar now in the next few days so yeah. So these are the 2 films and these are highly entertaining, fun films and I am happy to working with both the people I am working with because Prabhu Sir and Raj Ji both are people I have admired and loved their work and really excited. I had an absolutely fantastic time shooting with Raj Ji. I think he is the most phenomenal director for any actor because I think he is the best actor. I mean, he is such a good actor that its just wonderful seeing him tell you exactly what he wants from you. It would be great fun starting Rambo with Prabhu Sir, who is a phenomenal dancer and I hope I get to do some steps with him. I am trying to convince him to do something in the film. I am a huge fan and I have spent my schooling days learning steps from 'Muqabla' and 'Urvashi' and all that and he has been an inspiration in many ways as a dancer. Obviously, as a director he is loved by the audience and I am very, very excited to play this part in this film.
FS:Both Rajkumar Santoshi and Prabhu Deva films they are going to be like very, very mass oriented and we have been reading your interviews and reading about consciously you are just moving towards the mass entertainers as such and I think that is the call of the day as well right now, the way the movies are working as such. Something about that, both the films they have a direct appeal to the masses.
SK:You know, I have worked for 10 years now Faridoon and I think I have reached a point that I would like to try everything and I don't try and restrict myself in spaces, I want to do a lot of work. There are a lot of people out there who I would really love to work with and for me its important that I believe in the directors that I work with and I am very excited about both the directors that I am working with, Raj Ji and Prabhu Sir. So their vision for me is what I am going to try and follow. I am going to try and have fun doing it and I would like to work as an actor where you know, I try and create whatever the other person sees in me or wants me to be or however they have seen, as far as I am inspired by them, I would want to participate in their vision. And I have reached that point where I want to try a little bit of everything. So yes, both these films are going to be extremely mass-oriented, they are going to be high on entertainment. I am going to be doing a lot of action, a lot of comedy. I am playing parts which are very, very massy, yes for the first time and I have actually had a lot of fun with Raj Sir and am looking forward to having a lot of fun with Prabhu Sir as well.
FS: Rajkumar Santoshi is the maker of 'Andaz Apna Apna'.
SK:Yes! Yes!
FS:And I think almost everyone including, I think you must have loved the film, and its a cult classic.
SK:Yeah, I did.
FS:Do we have those mad moments of comedy because you have proved your mettle.
SK:Very premature to talk about the film, I think it would be best for Raj Ji to speak about it and when he wants to start talking about it. But like I said it is very high on entertainment and there is a lot of comedy in the film.
FS: Okay. I have been on the sets of one of the song recordings of Phata Poster in Mehboob Studio. Is it going to be a very, very colourful film.
SK:Haan! Yes, it will be. Its a fun film yaar, its going to be fun in every way, in terms of colours, in terms of the look, in terms of the songs, in terms of the content, it is going to be a fun film.
FS:And tentatively when is it going to be releasing.
SK:I think 23rd August is what the producers have announced, so I am guessing, unless there is a change in the date, it seems to be on track.
FS:Okay, and what about Rambo Rajkumar, any tentative idea, when that is going to be releasing.
SK:Towards the end of this year, I don't know. I think they have announced a date in November. I am not so sure. But I think they are looking at a November release. But I think the film, if all goes well, we should be looking at a November release.
FS:You are doing Bejoy Nambiar's film.
SK: Yes! Me and Bejoy have been talking for a while, and he is somebody that I really like, I think he is very talented and we are looking, to try and see if we can find something we want to work on.
FA: Shahid, one more thing is there that after Salman Khan, agar koi eligible bachelor bollywood mein hai, toh woh Shahid Kapoor hain. Something about that, any chances of that status changing or you feel that very, too much is made about the entire bachelor bit of actors as such.
SK:I mean, I don't really think that. I am happy in the space that I am in and I have never hidden anything in the past so I don't feel the need to hide it. So if there is somebody, I would fall in love, I will not hide it. But I am very happy wherever I am right now and feels good to be considered eligible.
FS: What exactly are your future plans, are you having anything else in the pipeline.
SK:No, right now its just these 2 films and once I am done with them I will be deciding on the next, as in I will be deciding now, but I will tell you then.
FS:Thank you very much Shahid, and Happy Birthday to you once again and all the best man!
SK:Thank you Faridoon. Cheers man!

Shahrukh Khan along with Indian President Mr Pranab Mukherji will inaugurate the University Cricket Championship at the Cricket Club Of India in Bombay on February 23 (which happens to be my birthday). "It's A Dream Come True To Work With Mr Bachchan In Satyagraha": Amrita Rao
"I've been shooting for Satygraha since February 13, since the time it started. I didn't tweet about it. I always wanted to work with Mr Prakash Jha. I've seen Mrityudand and I thought Madhuri ji was phenomenal in that. Very recently when he approached me for this film I was pleasantly surprised. My role is very significantly positioned with Mr Bachchan's character in the film and that was icing on the cake. It is a film on current issues and it is people's voice. It's a dream come true to work with Mr Bachchan. Just to be in close proximity to his divine aura is sheer magic," said Amrita Rao in a telephonic interview with me a short while back. Rao broke the news that she is also a part of Prakash Jha's Satyagraha. Amrita is currently shooting for Satyagraha and Anil Sharma's Singh Sahab The Great.

"Priyanka Chopra Has Got A Very Strong Character...": Tigmanshu Dhulia
"Milan Talkies ki shooting September 10 se start hai. Prem kahaani hai, aisi prem kahaani hai jisme hero heroine ka equal part hai. Heroine is not merely there to look pretty, shed a few tears and sing songs. She is much more than that. She has a got very strong character and so does the hero. Milan Talkies is all about celebrating the values of small town and celebrating cinema. It will be my contribution to 100 years of Indian cinema. It is not centered around the film industry. Jabalpur mein koi ladka hai vo bhi passionate ho sakta hai. Chote shahr ka ek banda hai jo passionate hai films ke baare mein aur doosri taraf pyaar bhi hai aur vo kaise balance karta hai, that's what the film is all about," said Tigmanshu Dhulia in an interview with me a few days ago about one of his forthcoming films 'Milan Talkies'.
"Bullet Raja, Jai Veeru Ki Kahaani Hai": Tigmanshu Dhulia
"Bullet Raja dosti ki film hai. Hai vo Jai Veeru ki kahaani. Jimmy Shergill Jai hain aur Saif Veeru hain. Then it becomes a revenge drama. Mahol bahut interesting hain. Kahaani kahan set hai vo mere liye bahut important hai bajaaye plot ke. Paan Singh Tomar ki do line ki kahaani hai, character driven hai. Bullet Raja bhi kaafi character driven hai, mahol vaali film hai. Bullet Raja lamhon vaali film hai, nuance vaali film hai," said Tigmanshu Dhulia in an interview with me recently about one of his forthcoming films Bullet Raja.
Kai Po Che: An Experience Of A Lifetime
In India, cricket is a religion. And religion, as in Religion, is all over the place. Kai Po Che reflects on the passionate fervour associated with Cricket and the possessive zealousness that sprouts out of Faith-Mongers in the country. But the film's heart, beats for an endearing friendship between three friends that goes through its share of ebbs-n-flows. As a viewer you are treated to an effortless brilliance, for you get gripped because of the story and the way its told. No known names in the starcast out here but the three young boys are surely going to stun you with their variety and completely contrasting body languages.
Kai Po Che is based on Chetan Bhagat's best selling novel Three Mistakes Of My Life. It is difficult to dissociate the book from the film. A book has the liberty to unfold at its own pace justifying the various contexts while the film is bound by time limitations. The tough part must have been the screenplay for the film. The writing team of Abhishek Kapoor, Chetan Bhagat, Pubali Chaudhuri and Supratik Sen must have gone through many sessions before arriving at the final draft. The climax (Gujarat riots and the madness associated with it) in the film is far more toned down than what it is in the novel. The film focuses on the friendship and the turmoil that it goes through. The film also gives out a positive message on the genuine need for communal harmony in the country.
At a very critical juncture in the film, Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) comes to know that his best friend Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav) is having an affair with his sister. The mood of the film suddenly changes with a slap and then it gets back on the tracks of mad frenzy. The 2001 Gujarat earthquake unites everyone in tragedy but there were some who hit a discordant note of communalism. India's historic victory against Australia in 2001 erupts the whole nation and the tricolour cements a Friendship. Omi (Amit Sadh) deviates towards the devious activities of his uncle to payback a loan and then gets sucked into the politics of unfortunate circumstances. Ishaan wants to shrug off the cricketing failure from his back by mentoring prodigious Ali. Vidya (Amrita Puri) is supposed to learn Maths from Govind but instead ends up sharing some chapters of Biology with him. The writing team has picked up crafty vignettes of important situations from the novel and have nicely blended them in the film.
Somehow, the filmmakers need to rise above stereotyping various communities. The red tilak on Omi's forehead and Ali's scull cap symbolises their respective religions. Moreover, the tacky green amulet tied around Ali's neck is an eyesore. Other than this, the detailing in the film is brilliant. Govind wears cost effective sooti shirts which goes well with the enterprising Gujarati businessmen who value making-money rather than splurging it on themselves. The Nokia mobile phones and the ringtones are so 2001. The sepia colour tone used to establish the flashback, sets the mood perfectly. Dialogue are laced with wit, irony, pain and helplessness.
Amit Trivedi's music and Swanand Kirkire's lyrics are a big highpoint of the film. Roothe khwabon ko mana lenge, kati patangon ko thaamenge, suljha lenge uljhe rishton ka maanjha. The endeavour to simplify personal relationships and the attempt to bridge gaps between religions should be the way forward. Meethi Boliyan is very special. Anay Goswami's cinematography is captivating. The fidgety camera movement in some situations actually conveys the mood of the moment. Deepa Bhatia's editing relies on simple editing chops. The languid pace of the film lets you settle down comfortably in the narrative of the film. Some may find the pace a wee bit slow. Usage of Gujarati is required by the context of the film and doesn't hamper the flow at all. It is easy to understand by the Hindi speaking audience.
The three boys, Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh have given towering performances. Sushant is a rockstar. The casual gait, the natural style and an inherent earnestness is fascinating. The usually-tough-dude succumbs to pressure and requests friend Govind to come and be with him during a tricky situation. Raj Kumar Yadav is undoubtedly one of the finest talents that we have today. This actor played the reckless letch to perfection in Ragini MMS and here he plays the demure conscientious youngster with an amazing finesse. Watch him scold the autorickshaw driver while he nervously interacts with Amrita Puri or the helpless rage that vents out when Ishaan steals business money to help Ali or the desolate emptiness that manifests when their shop withers out during the earthquake. Amit Sadh shows the maximum growth as a character in the film. The boy who follows and supports Ishaan in whatever he does to a man who turns away from his best friends and ends up doing something drastic that changes lives forever. Watch the stunned silence when he hears the news of his parents' death or when the devil shakes out the angel from his heart during the communal violence. Amrita Puri is cute and very likable.
Abhishek Kapoor has proved that Rock On was not a fluke and most certainly he is a man who knows what he's doing. Obviously he has invested a lot of time, energy and thought in making this film. You know a film is great when it stops pretending to be a film. It becomes an experience of a lifetime. Kai Po Che does that to you. It is hugely watchable. Again and again.

Ram Gopal Varma Has Sung A Song In 'The Attacks Of 26/11'
In an interview with me today, Ram Gopal Varma disclosed that he has sung a song in the Telugu version of his forthcoming film 'The Attacks Of 26/11'. RGV said that he didn't sing in the Hindi version since he is not too sure of his Hindi diction.
"Kick Will Be One Of The Most Expensive Movies Of Bollywood": Chetan Bhagat
"I've seen the Telugu 'Kick' around twenty times by now. Rajat Arora is writing the dialogue for the film but I am helping out. Everyone is working together in a way. It's quite difficult for me. Doing a story from fresh is ok but here you have to realise that you have Salman Khan, you have to make sure that Salman fans have to be happy and the story has to be sensible. It's a tough one, but I am trying my best. It is quite challenging. But I did it for the kick, literally. It is going to be one of the most expensive movies of Bollywood," said Chetan Bhagat in an interview with me recently, who is writing the screenplay of Salman Khan starrer 'Kick' which is being directed by Sajid Nadiadwala.

'Special 26' Book To Be Launched Tomorrow Feb 15
A book on 'Special 26' is being launched tomorrow February 15, 2013 at an event in Bombay. Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and director Neeraj Pandey will be present.
Here's Hoping 'Kai Po Che' Will Bolster The Idea Of India
The premiere of Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che is taking place in Mumbai on February 18, 2013 which happens to be a Monday. The film releases on february 22, 2013. I interviewed Chetan Bhagat today who is the author of Three Mistakes Of My Life on which the film has been based upon. Chetan has lost around ten kgs since the last time I interviewed him and I've lost around 15 kgs. So, between the two of us we were around 25 Kgs lighter. We joked about it on camera too.
Chetan was visibly tense and the unshaven look was a testimony to an anxiety that he must be experiencing because of the upcoming release. I've had long discussions with Chetan immediately after the release of Three Idiots where he felt shortchanged since proper credit was not given to him (the film was based on his novel Five Point Someone). He was hurt by the snub and then he channelised his feelings on the blog. The raging controversy that followed is still fresh in everyone's minds. He is very happy with the "ethical practices" adapted by the production house of his current film in giving him the due credit. Chetan asked our cameraman to zoom in on the standee where his name was mentioned to show how his credit had been given on the posters even though it was not part of the contract. On his part Chetan has gone all out to promote the film on Twitter and elsewhere. "Beti ka byah hone vala hai bus, that's the feeling I'm experiencing," said Chetan when I pointed out at his immense involvement with the project and the anxiety clearly written on his face.
Chetan has been extremely supportive of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the past few months. The question that I've had in my mind is that whether we will see the book (Three Mistakes Of My Life) getting translated on to screen in all honesty or whether creative liberties have been taken to deflect away from one of the important turning points in the film where the three main protagonists (All Hindus) save a Muslim boy amidst the communal carnage of Gujarat in 2002. After the interview, Chetan told me that, "Your community will be proud of the film". I reacted, it's not about my community or any other community, I just hope that the highlight of the book will not be diluted.
I have this urge to support the underdog. The community, colour, race, creed doesn't matter. When people in large groups are labelled as bad or worth-being-punished or disbelieved, then I have a problem. The interview is over and will be in the public space soon. The film will be out soon too. It has got a U certificate. Let's hope the film binds people together and bolsters the Idea of India.

Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi (Faridoon Shahryar)
This is the music video of 'Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi', a Nazm written by my father Professor Shahryar (Jananpith Award winning Urdu Poet and lyricist of Muzaffar Ali's Gaman and Umrao Jaan). Navneet Kedar has composed this Nazm while I've sung it. The video has been directed by my wife Aarefa who can also be seen in the video. She is a tough taskmaster. It took us around a month to make this video since she insisted on getting the context of the Nazm right. The response has been great so far.
Five Ghazals/ Nazms (Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi, Shab-e-Gham Kya Karein, Khwaab Se Rishta, Naseem-e-Soobh Ro Rahi Hai and Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise) have been launched on the premiere online music portal artistaloud.com. Here is the link:

"Will Try And Win Court Cases On Merit, Not Because Of Any Loopholes": Salman Khan
"I can't talk about the court cases (Hit and run case and Black Buck case) since they are subjudice. When the time comes for me to speak, I will speak. We will try and win it (the court cases) on merit, not because of any loopholes, not because we've got really good lawyers but try and win it properly and come out clean. If I am required to be present at the hearing of the cases, then I will be present," said Salman Khan at the press briefing of 2013 CCL opening ceremony in 2013.

"Great experience meeting Mammootty and Mohanlal today. Amazing guys. Actors here are like Gods and good guys too. I was most happy to meet Dilip. I was happy to meet his kids too," said Salman Khan at the opening ceremony of 2013 CCL at Kochi in response to a question on his interaction with the stars from the Malayalam film industry.
"Absence Of Riteish And Mahesh Manjrekar Is A Big Loss": Salman Khan
"Absence of Riteish is a big loss for Mumbai Heroes. Riteish and Mahesh Manjrekar played really well for Mumbai Heroes CCL team. It's a big loss. "It has been a good journey for CCL. People are getting hooked on to it. A lot of serious actors playing serious cricket which is a good thing. Some cricketers have got job in the acting field. Four guys have come in the Malayalam film industry. Obviously they are cricketers and movies will be made on them. Now, because they are in movies, they can play CCL, which is not fair," said Salman Khan while speaking to the media at the opening ceremony of CCL in Kochi on February 9, 2013.

Kareena Kapoor and Shobha De will launch the book 'The Style Diary Of A Bollywood Diva' at an event in Bombay tomorrow February 6, 2013. The book has been compiled by Rochelle Pinto and is basically Kareena's thoughts on diet, clothes, workout, how to plan your holidays, make up and the works. I've read the book. What stayed with me is a certain intelligent and sprightly sense of humour which Kareena's fans may not have experienced yet. It is a must read for the devoted fans. Kareena's childhood pictures are an added bonus.
